Since the pandemic, a lot more people work from home, and the desk they work at makes a real difference to their day. Computer desks come in different sizes, shapes and materials. Before you buy, think about why you need the desk, the material you want and what you want to spend.

What makes a good computer desk?

Three things matter most when you buy a desk for a home office: the space you have, your budget and the material. Here is how to think about each one.

The size of the desk

Measure the spot where the desk will go before you choose. A desk that is too big will not fit a small home office, and a small desk can look lost in a large room. Your monitor, laptop, keyboard and mouse all sit on top, so if you want books or files within reach too, allow extra room. Our home office computer desk has two open shelves for exactly that.

The shape of the desk

Computer desks come in a few shapes: standard straight desks, L-shaped desks, U-shaped desks and rounded tables. An unused corner is often the best place for a home office, and that is where an L-shaped corner desk makes the most of the space. Most computer desks are made from solid wood, engineered wood or MDF, often on a metal frame. The material changes the price, the look and the weight of the desk. Metal frames with engineered or particleboard tops cost less and are lighter to move. Solid wood costs more. Pick the material that suits how you will use the desk.

If you spend hours at your desk, choose a desk and chair that suit your body and your room. Check the desk height against your chair. Shelves, pull-out keyboard trays and storage racks all help keep things in reach, and rounded edges are kinder when you bend down to pick something up. The chair matters as much as the desk: take a look at the office swivel chair, or add a seat cushion and lumbar support pillow to the chair you already have.
